Remember “Tie Fighter,” “Freespace” or “privateer” ? Space flight simulators for some time been a popular genre. Then, however, the producers suddenly stopped releasing to market games of this type. But suddenly there was a breakthrough. After that, Chris Roberts announced the formation of the “Star Citizen”, the creators realized that the time for a renaissance of space shooters.
First, the computers went challenging “Elite: Dangerous” and now daylight saw a game that is perhaps less complicated and instead of space exploration poses hard to fight, but it is extremely addictive. Lead designer of Diablo and Torchlight, Eric Schaefer together with their colleagues from the “Runic Studio” finally released to the market “Rebel Galaxy”.
The story begins, as in such games – are summoned to the space station by an aunt of the main character that has him reveal a secret. Of course, it is no longer there, and we need to find her. As we start with the simplest ship and primitive weapon, but first you need to take our vehicle to improve. In this segment, “Rebel Galaxy” does not bring anything new – we can either trade, to extract resources from asteroids, or perform missions of killing enemies.
So we choose the first mission of the suspected alien, head out into space and … surprise. In contrast to the old space simulators, this time we can only move in two dimensions – left and right. There is no possibility of movement in all three dimensions. This does not mean that it will be easier for us.
When traveling to a waypoint, meaning the mission, we face call for help. However, one should be careful – it can only be a freighter under fire by some fighters, and it could be an ambush pirates, composed of several destroyers from eskortą.Czasem our journey can also stop an asteroid field – warp drive does not work because when properties of high molecular weight. You then need to get past an obstacle and move on.
Once you reach the place, the time on the essence of the game – a brutal fight for survival. Enemies usually is too much, so you have to sweat in order to clear the area of the mission. Our ship is equipped with several types of weapons – towers, which alone track down target and weapons onboard, like that from the days of sailing ships. To him shoot, we have set up broadside to the enemy, aim and give salvo. Of course, the enemy does not leave us in peace and firing on the ship on each side, so you need to properly maneuver to protect more damaged part of the hull, while still have enemy ships in the viewfinder. For this most of the fighting takes place in the asteroid field or around the space wrecks, so you’ll need to be careful where you going, so as not to collide with an object in space.
Of course, as in this type of games, we can change weapons – the powerful, the more it costs and the slower shoots. We must therefore decide – if we focus on the powerful but long charging up and running, or to backfill the enemy fire with lighter weapons.
A few words about the graphics – the universe is beautiful. At the maximum settings and a resolution of 1440p, the game looks great. Great cast models of units – on the ships you see damage, explosions are spectacular. Equally sensational is music. The soundtrack is based on rock pieces – they perfectly fit the space battles, or exploring space.
But there is no game without flaws. You can accuse “Rebel Galaxy” a secondary nature – despite various descriptions of the mission, all boils down to “Share to point A, destroy the enemy”. It may eventually start to be boring. The second thing is the lack of automatic save points – would it make, you need to visit one of the space station. If so take to perform five tasks, and the fourth die, you have them all start from scratch. The only cure for it is to go to the title screen – the game is then saved. This, however, spoils the fluidity of the game.
In conclusion – although “Rebel Galaxy” was not created by the largest development studios, this is a very successful product. Older players nostalgically recall the hours spent in the “Privateerze” and younger will be good fun. It’s well made space shooter that will give fans of such games the mass of joy. Especially since in the Steam store it costs less than 20 euros.
