C-5 Galaxy aircraft week - Onet.pl

id=”intertext_1″> As part of our series aircraft week, we decided to wallpaper a unique machine – one of the largest and heaviest aircraft in the world, the C-5 Galaxy derived from the stable of Lockheed. This aircraft along with the smaller engine – Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is used by the U.S. command airlift to transport equipment and troops anywhere in the world.

id=”intertext_2″> Since 1968, over the next 15 years, this machine was the largest and heaviest aircraft in the world. Was dethroned only by the Soviet Antonov-124 Ruslan.

id=”intertext_2″> Trivia:
– in contrast to most transport aircraft that are not able to carry a single, a 60-ton M1 Abrams tank, C-5 takes it on board without difficulty , and with it has 3 infantry fighting vehicle M2 Bradley, along with the crew and mechanics;
– during “Desert Shield” fleet of 85 C-5 transported a total of more than 42% of all equipment and personnel, which is about a quarter million tons load!;
– during the first 21 days during the Gulf War, aircraft C-5 transported heavier equipment on all goods transported by air bridge during the blockade of West Berlin;
– on the upper deck of the C-5 can take 73 soldiers, fully armed, but if necessary can take as many as 360 in a cabin in goods;
– chassis machines can be hydraulically lowered to facilitate loading, which can be performed simultaneously on the front and rear – loading is possible by lowering the flaps under the tail or raise the front part of the fuselage;
– Lockheed claims that a series of four turbofan engines General Electric CF6, furnished to the machine, is greater than the force of 48 locomotives;
– due to their size machine was known as “Fat Albert” (called fat Albert), but recently more and more popular is the abbreviation FRED (short Fucking Ridiculous Economic Disaster), due to the enormous amount of work above ground, the machine requires, it is estimated that for every hour flight for 16 hours of service above ground.
